The original kitchen was cramped, dark and inefficient. The goal was to design a space, which restored and maintained original architectural details of the century-old home while creating a modern space suitable for a large family. In order to give the family a much-needed mudroom, we designed the original exterior breezeway off the back of the house to serve as a new mudroom – complete with custom built-ins and slate flooring. The floorplan of the kitchen space was reconfigured to give the client additional storage and prep space, as well as create room for a 48” Thermador range. The design maintained an eat-in breakfast area with access to the backyard with a new Pella French door. Several of the original architectural features of the space were preserved and restored. The windows in the kitchen prep space were brought back to working order; the exterior breezeway structure was enclosed, and custom doors and windows were installed in the original arched openings. Ohio-built cabinets were custom-designed and built, with custom accessories throughout: spice drawer, silverware drawer, tray dividers and more. The Steel Grey countertops and dark hardwood-style tile floors create contrast between the bright, white cabinetry. A marble backsplash with mosaic feature over the range, bring texture and depth to the space.
